This program is ideal for someone who has been simply labeled a ‘picky eater’ and can include textural issues, dislike of foods or food groups, or someone who has been diagnosed with Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). When not treated early on, the client may experience growth problems, malnutrition, social anxiety, or family distress.     Some typical characteristics of someone who would benefit from this program are:

  • An overall disinterest in food
  • Limited foods he/she is willing to eat
  • Anxiety, tears, even temper tantrums when presented with food challenges
  • Food neophobia, or fear of trying new foods
  • Sensitivity to textures
  • Heightened sense of taste or a ‘supertaster’
  • Expresses dislike of a food simply based off of how it looks or smells
  • Growth problems from prolonged inadequate nutrition

We understand how these struggles can impact your wellbeing, as well as the family unit as a whole. Our goal is to empower the client and the parents or caregivers, to feel more confident and less stressed around food and to make meal times more enjoyable.  There is no ‘one size fits all’ approach, and we will tailor the treatment to  individual needs, personality, past experiences with food, age, and readiness.  Compassion and understanding are key components of our program.  Finding your personal motivators to expand your food choices is very important.

This program includes:

  • Coordination of care between pediatrician, speech therapist, occupational therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist (if applicable), and school staff when necessary
  • Evaluation of growth charts
  • Individual food challenges together in session with gentle approach
  • Food chaining (when applicable)
  • Strategically planned food challenges at home between sessions
  • Family support for meal times, how to support your child at home in this journey, what to say and not to say to your child
  • Coaching on meal planning to ensure adequate nutrition while we are expanding food choices and amounts
  • Discussion with your child around specific fears with food and assisting them in verbalizing their anxieties.
  • Restaurant Outing (when applicable)
  • Grocery Store Outing (when applicable)
  • Homework assignments: goal setting, weekly challenges targeted to help advance your child in his/her journey towards more normalized eating
